RESONANCE IN PHENOLS : Cause of ACIDITY in PHENOLS

RESONANCE IN PHENOLS (ACIDITY OF PHENOLS)

Phenols  are HydroxyBenzene The Hydroxy group is directly attached to sp2 hybridised Carbon atom of Benzene ring As Benzene is Electron Withdrawing (EWG) in nature, thus charge delocalisation and distribution in phenol molecule causes the Oxygen atom of -OH group to acquire Positive charge. Due to higher electronegativity of sp2 hybridised carbon to which Hydrixy group)-OH) is attached  in Phenol, the electron density around oxygen atom decreases. This favours easy loss of Hydrogen atom in form og Hydrogen ion. Thus this resuls in increase in ionisation of Phenols. This is the reason why Phenol's are acidic in nature. Phenols due to high acidity are also known as Carbolic acids
